Dr. Julie Dostal, Executive Director of the LEAF Council on Alcoholism and Addictions

Julie Dostal, PhD, is the Executive Director of the LEAF Council on Alcoholism and Addictions and has been with the organization since 1998.

Dr. Dostal also serves as the President of the National Professional Association of Council Executives and is on the Board of Directors of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependencies. 

Julie teaches an upper division course on addiction at SUNY Oneonta in the Human Ecology Department.  She has been invited as a speaker at local, State, National and International events on topics ranging from substance abuse prevention, addiction science, community coalition building, media literacy, and problem gambling.

 

 

Kate Hewlett, Peer Engagement Specialist

Kate Hewlett works as the Peer Engagement Specialist at the Otsego County Adult Behavioral Health Services Clinic.  She has many years lived experience with mental health and wellness, is a NYCB Certified Peer Specialist, and an NYCA Certified Recovery Peer Advocate.  In 1997 she earned her Associates Degree from Fisher College in Boston, MA and studied creative writing at the University of Arizona.

Kate is part of the DSRIP Medicaid Redesign, the Regional Advisory Committee, and SAFE Otsego.  She co chair’s the Otsego County Mental Health Subcommittee and is on the Mohawk Valley Regional Planning Consortium Board of Directors

Kate is a recovery and empowerment speaker sharing her message of hope.  She believes that folks with a psychiatric diagnosis can live a genuinely happy, self directed life of their choosing, and recovery can be a reality!  Her journey from hopeless to hopeful has been shared with many community based organizations, colleges and universities, the NAMI NYS Education Conference, the NYAPRS Annual Conference, and SUNY Oneonta Clinical Psychology Class.

Kate’s an avid reader of culinary murder mysteries and has her own baking business, Kate’s Kreations.  She enjoys writing and photography.  She is a Wellness Recovery Action Planning Facilitator and a Reiki practitioner. 

In 2013-2017 she served on the NAMI Otsego Board of Directors and was President in 2016.  She co-facilitates the Alternatives to Suicide support group and facilitates the Peer Alliance League support group.  She is currently the co-CEO of the Peer Alliance League which is in progress of becoming a 501(c)(3).
